When you think of Tasmania, do you think of that angry little devil zipping around Looney Toons in a constant cloud of dust? You might be surprised to learn that this Australian province has more to offer than the famous Tasmanian Devil, and Southport Tasmania is the perfect spot to base yourself for some rest and relaxation, while you explore the rest of the area.

In this post, we'll cover how to get from the capital city of Hobart to Southport Tasmania, as well as the best things to do in the town, and the surrounding area.

Where is Southport, Tasmania?

There's a good chance that Southport has slipped under your radar until now. Its main claim to fame is that it's Australia's southernmost town, but you could easily skim over Southport on a map as it's a small and quiet town.

Southport, Tasmania is located in perfect proximity for visitors who want to visit the Southwest National Park, which is Tasmania's largest reserve and is home to sensational views of jagged peaks and shimmering waters. Visitors to the national park can enjoy hiking, cycling, kayaking, and scenic drives.

As of 2016, the town of Southport Tasmania was home to just 135 people and was originally settled in 1837 as a shipping town.

Once upon a time, Southport was the second largest town in Tasmania and almost became the capital city, as a thriving whaling and timber hub. Nowadays, it's largely untouched by tourism, though Tasmanians love this peaceful and charming town and visit it to take a break from the everyday stresses of their hectic lives.

Did you know Southport is so small that it only has 1 shop?

How To Get To Southport From Hobart

If you're looking to get from Hobart to Southport by car, you can relax. It's an easy 1.5-hour journey south from the capital of Tasmania and follows just one road (the A6) for the entire journey. The A6 actually ends in Southport so you won't have to worry about driving too far and missing it. You can just get your favorite playlist going and enjoy the landscapes of South Australia.

Without a car, the next best way to get to Southport from Hobart is by bus, however, you will have to make a change along the way. The #D1 bus from the city will take you most of the way, but you'll have to take a taxi for the final part of your journey, from the 6969 Huon Highway bus stop.

What To Do In Southport, Tasmania

It may be small but it's mighty. You won't run out of things to do around Southport, here are 6 of the best attractions in the area.

Roaring Beach

One of the highlights of Southport is Roaring Beach, which stands out like a turquoise gem, with clear blue waters sparkling around a bay of white sand and dense trees.

While its beauty is unquestionable, it's not only its appearance that makes Roaring Beach remarkable, it's also a fantastic surf spot with moderate surf swells, suitable for many levels of surfers.

The beach has 2 sections, and if you want to enjoy some tranquility and have the shore to yourself, head to the Eastern section and frolic in the waters undisturbed.

Watch The Southern Lights

We've all heard of the Northern Lights. The Aurora Borealis is widely known as one of the most magical experiences a human being can experience, looking up to the sky at night. But, did you know about the Aurora Australis? Similar to the Northern Lights, Southport Tasmania is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the colorful phenomenon, as there is no land between the town and Antarctica.

The Southern Lights tend to be the most visible between the months of March and September, and are just as remarkable as the Northern lights, despite being lesser-known. If you happen to be lucky enough to witness and capture this incredible sight and would like to share your photos with the world, consider joining our community, a hub for female travelers, which connects women around the globe to share stories, photos, and experiences. Cockle Creek

If you want to earn bragging rights with your friends and be able to say that you've visited Australia's southernmost driving point (and you may as well while you're so close), you should check out Cockle Creek. It's not easy to access, with 20 km/12 miles of dirt roads, but the views are spectacular and definitely worth the difficult drive.

There are a number of hikes to do around the area, as well as the opportunity to learn about the history of this part of Australia if you can cast your eyes away from the beautiful wilderness surrounding you for just a second.

Hastings Caves

Just a 10-minute drive away from Southport lies Hastings Caves.

Most caves are made from limestone, which is what gives Hastings Cave the edge. Rather than limestone, this cave is made of dolomite, and it is in fact Australia's oldest dolomite cave system, at a staggering 40 million years old,  making it an interesting and fun place to look around.

Hastings Thermal Hot Springs

If you're imagining steaming natural pools covered by canopies of lush green trees with views out over the ocean, you'll be disappointed by Hastings Thermal Hot Springs. Nevertheless, the hot springs are a fun addition to a day at the caves and a good way to refresh yourself before heading back to Southport

While most similar to a standard outdoor swimming pool, the Hastings Thermal Hot Springs is naturally heated to around 28°C/ 82°F. It's a great place to relax with friends, with outdoor picnic areas and BBQ facilities. You can also take the Platypus walk and hopefully spot some fuzzy friends.

Mystery Creek Cave

If Hastings Cave doesn't sound fascinating enough for you, how about Mystery Creek Cave which looks other-worldly with the illumination of millions of tiny glow worms.

There are no tours here, so make sure to know your own limit as experience is a plus in this cave. The conditions can get slippery and muddy, so ensure you're wearing proper footwear for this 4km walk through these magical caves that also show evidence of Australia's mining past.
